An award-winning art director, Janice McLean has over two decades of experience working on national magazines, starting as a designer with Harrowsmith and Equinox magazines and becoming the art director of Equinox in 1994, and Canadian Geographic in 1996. In recent years, she has taken jobs that allow her to work from Kingston, Ontario, an easy distance from both Ottawa and Toronto, where most of her clients are based. She was hired in 1999 to design the National Gallery of Canada’s member magazine Vernissage, and when the publisher changed jobs to become vice-president of media for the Canadian Medical Association in 2006, he asked her to come along to create a patients’ magazine for the CMA, Canadian Health, and its french-language sister, Santé canadienne. Currently, Janice designs SkyNews, the Canadian magazine of astronomy and stargazing.

In addition to working on SkyNews, Janice McLean is creative director for Bookmakers Press, a company which produces full-colour nonfiction books and calendars that are distributed throughout North America by Canadian publishers. Responsibilities include design and layout, photo editing, illustration assignment and liaison with printers and film houses (colour correction of images, file submission and proofing). Since 1998, she has designed more than 30 books and 50 calendar titles for clients Firefly Books Ltd., Canadian Geographic Enterprises and Pokeweed Press. Of special note: As art director for two cookbooks, The Chez Piggy Cookbook (a Cuisine Canada silver award winner) and The Pan Chancho Cookbook, she was principal food and prop stylist.
